George Calvert (1818 - 1882)
George Calvert (1818 – 1882) married Mary Brumfitt (1819 – 1856) at Wakefield All Saints, on 19 May 1839. He was living at Silcoates, Wakefield and his occupation was Rope maker in the Calvert Rope Factory. His gravestone can be found in front of the church at St Paul’s Wrenthorpe. The headstone is horizontal in the grass just in front of the signage for services. On this headstone he is noted as Rope Maker of Wrenthorpe. When his first son Joseph Calvert (1839 – 1882) was born, they were living in Agbrigg (lower Division) at Nooking Kirkhamgate in Wakefield. George took over the factory works in 1842 the same year John Calvert (1842 – 1894) is born. Rachel Ann Calvert (1844 – 1890); William Calvert (1846 – 1921) is born on 30 May 1846 in Potovens Outwood Wrenthorpe; Charles Calvert (1848 – 1907) and finally Thomas Calvert (1850 – 1884) born in December in 1850 and baptised in St Paul’s Church, Alverthorpe.
By 1861 George Calvert (1818 – 1882), is a widower aged 43. Mary Calvert (1819 – 1861) died before the April 1861 Census. The only daughter Rachel Calvert (1844 – 1890) is only 16 years old and is now the housekeeper of the home with his five other sons. His father Samuel Calvert (1788 – 1865) is living close by (out of prison by now). By 1871, according to the census, George is now 53, living in Wrenthorpe with sons, William, Charles and Thomas. His occupation is Rope maker as is Charles. Thomas is factory hand worsted and William is store keeper. They are living in Trough Lane at Stanley Cum Wrenthorpe. George Calvert died on 18 April 1882 aged 65. In 1881, he is living with Charles Calvert in Alverthorpe.
